Opening of AFL Head Office, Halsey Street, Auckland City
Released on 13th October 2008AFL chief executive Jeremy Fleming says the move allows for key staff roles including the chief financial officer and human resources director to work alongside AFL's operating Divisions. A number of the staff from the Wellington office have re-located to Auckland. This also means head office can work more closely to the company's Inshore, OPC, and Aquaculture divisions. AFL owns Moana Pacific, OPC, Kia Ora Seafoods, Prepared Foods Limited in Palmerston North, Pacific Marine Farms and is the Maori shareholder in Sealord Group Ltd.
AFL is owned by all iwi throughout Aotearoa through shares they acquired through the Maori Commercial Fisheries Settlement with the Crown in 1992.
The opening will be conducted by Tainui and Ngati Whatua, while taonga will be gifted to AFL by Ngati Porou (artwork), Ngai Tahu (pounamu), and Ngatiwai (whalebone).
Those attending include AFL Moana Pacific staff at Halsey Street, other staff from Pukekohe, Manurewa and Tauranga as well as key clients, the AFL board and iwi representatives and representatives from Te Ohu Kaimoana.

New members appointed to board of AFL

Te Ohu Kaimoana today announced that six directors had been appointed to the Board of Aotearoa Fisheries Limited (AFL), the commercial arm of Maori fisheries.
Existing directors Craig Norgate, Keith Sutton and Matanuku Mahuika have been reappointed to the board and new directors Wayne Peters, Fred Cookson and Harry Mikaere were also appointed. The recently-appointed chairman Robin Hapi's term expires in three years. The appointment of the three new directors increases the board to seven members.
The Chairman of Te Ohu Kaimoana, Archie Taiaroa, said the three new members would make an added contribution to the work of AFL and replace director Craig Ellison. Each brings with them expertise and experience in different sectors of the fishing industry.
Wayne Peters is a lawyer with 26 years' experience in commercial, property and financial law. Mr Peters started his own legal firm, Wayne W Peters and Associates, this year after almost 20 years as a partner at Thomson Wilson Solicitors in Whangarei. He acts for many iwi and hapu organisations and represents major Northland commercial clients in a wide range of matters as well as serving on the board of the Auckland Law Society and the New Zealand Law Society. He has been instrumental in Ngati Wai fisheries development.
Fred Cookson is a director of Te Ohu Kaimoana and will provide a link between AFL and its major shareholder. He is a chartered accountant with 18 years' public practice experience and is a senior partner in the firm Cookson Forbes KCSM Ltd based in Opotiki. Over the years, Fred has worked throughout the Waiariki and Tairawhiti districts with iwi organisations as they manage farming, horticulture, forestry and fishing assets. Fred has a Bachelor of Commerce degree and is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of New Zealand.
Harry Mikaere is trustee of the Hauraki Maori Trust Board and has 30 years' experience in practical, technical and policy aspects of the New Zealand fishing industry, including more than 20 years aquaculture experience growing mussels and oysters. He and his wife Ruth own a number of marine farms in the Hauraki Gulf. Harry is currently an interim director in Aquaculture New Zealand Ltd, a director of the Ngati Kahungunu Asset Holding Company, a director of Treaty Tribes Coalition and the Hauraki Maori Trust Board's nominated director on Hauraki Fishing Group Ltd and Tai Moana Marine Farms Ltd.
Mr Taiaroa thanked director Craig Ellison for his long contribution to the development of AFL since its establishment in 2004 and Maori fisheries in general. Craig, who comes from a family with a long history of fishing, served as the chairman of Moana Pacific Fisheries from 1998 until it was merged into AFL in 2004 and served as a member of the Treaty of Waitangi Fisheries Commission from 1993 until the passing of the Maori Fisheries Act in 2004.

Sealord, AFL and Sanford Call for Reduction in Hoki Quota

Sealord, Aotearoa Fisheries and Sanford would like a reduction in the Hoki Total Allowable Commercial Catch (TACC) for the long term good of the hoki fishery, Sealord and Aotearoa Fisheries Chair Robin Hapi and Sanford Managing Director Eric Barratt said today.

Maori Seafood Company Announces Appointment

Mr Don Collier, Aotearoa Fisheries Limited's (AFL's) Group Management Accountant has been appointed General Manager Aquaculture.
"Don has been a valuable member of the AFL finance team since the company was formed in 2004. We are pleased he will continue with the development of AFL's investment in the aquaculture sector, in particular the farming and marketing of Pacific Oysters."
AFL Executive Chairman, Robin Hapi, said today. Mr Collier will be accountable for the performance of the aquaculture division and will provide leadership and management in order to maximise shareholder value.
"Nearly half the fish consumed as food worldwide was from aquaculture rather than wild fisheries in the last year. A UN Food and Agriculture Organisation report shows developed nations imported 33 million tonnes of fish worth over $US61 billion in 2004."
"Aquaculture is a very important component of the AFL investment strategy, with the company having made a number of aquaculture investments in the last few years. Additionally, Maori have yet to see the results of an agreement with the Crown for aquaculture space, and this is an area that AFL will be focussing on in the coming year," Mr Hapi said.
Mr Collier was involved in the acquisition of Kia Ora Seafoods and the recent investment in a Whangaroa oyster farm last month.
Originally from Hastings (Ngati Porou, Kahungunu and Rongomaiwahine), Mr Collier is a chartered accountant, having gained his BCA at Victoria University in 1982. He first joined the fishing industry in 2002 after a successful career in the private sector including three years with Shell Oil New Zealand, 11 years with Rothmans of Pall Mall (NZ), including time in the company's Asia-Pacific regional operations team.
Immediately prior to joining the Maori fishing sector, Mr Collier spent three years at the New Zealand Dairy Board (Wellington) as a Product Finance Manager, and two years at Te Mangai Paho as Finance and Administration Manager.
Mr Hapi said that Mr Collier will continue championing the core AFL values of integrity, teamwork, innovation and operational excellence, with the aim of developing and implementing strategic business plans within the aquaculture division.
Aotearoa Fisheries Half Yearly Results

The Maori owned Aotearoa Fisheries Limited today announced a first half years profit for the Group of $18.4m for the period ended 31 March 2007.
CEO Robin Hapi said "this builds on the $15.0m profit achieved for the same period last year" he described the result as "an encouraging start to the year in the face of some very significant challenges both economic and political".
Aotearoa Fisheries Limited also announced today that Mr Hapi had been appointed as the Chairperson of Sealord Group Limited following the resignation of Mr Robert McLeod. Mr Hapi noted that the Boards of AFL and Sealord recognised the significant contribution made by Mr McLeod in the establishment of AFL and the development of AFL and Sealord as strong performing businesses.
Mr Hapi said that he was looking forward to his new role as Chairperson of AFL and Sealord, building on the work already undertaken and helping to shape the future of these two very important investments for Maori.
Te Ohu Kaimoana Announces New Chairman

Te Ohu Kaimoana today announced changes to the board of Aotearoa Fisheries Limited (AFL). "There have been a number of appointments as a result of the recent resignation of Mr Rob McLeod from the boards of AFL and Sealord, as well as the board of Te Ohu Kaimoana," Mr Archie Taiaroa, Deputy Chair said.
Mr Taiaroa said the current Chief Executive of AFL, Mr Robin Hapi, has been appointed chairman of AFL.
"The appointment of Mr Hapi to the board of AFL is a natural decision for Te Ohu Kaimoana. Mr Hapi has been the CE of AFL since it was established in 2004. He was previously the CE of the former Treaty of Waitangi Fisheries Commission and has been on the Sealord board since 1998. Mr Hapi has resigned his position as CEO of AFL and AFL will be undertaking a process to appoint a replacement.
"The appointment will enable Mr Hapi to continue the work he started as CE which has resulted in AFL becoming one of the eminent participants in the seafood industry", Peter Douglas, Chief Executive of Te Ohu Kaimoana, said.
In addition AFL has announced that Mr Hapi has been appointed as the Chairman of Sealord. "This announcement comes only a matter of days after the appointment of the new Chief Executive of Sealord, Mr Graham Stuart, who takes over the role from Mr Doug McKay. An extensive worldwide search was undertaken for a new CE, and we are fortunate to have someone of Graham's calibre," Mr Hapi said.
AFL Aquires OPC Fish and Lobster Limited

Maori-owned Aotearoa Fisheries Limited (AFL) is continuing to acquire strategic assets and has bought Whitianga-based OPC Fish and Lobster Limited (OPC), its associated interests and significant quota portfolio, AFL Chairman Rob McLeod announced today.
“AFL is extremely pleased to have acquired this much-respected business,” Mr McLeod said.
“This acquisition further strengthens AFL’s position in key North Island inshore fisheries and is complementary to the existing AFL inshore operations.”
Mr McLeod said the company has performed well and provided consistent profits to its former owner throughout a period of very high exchange rates in its key markets.
OPC will operate as a division within AFL. OPC General Manager Elisha Yahel will remain with the business and report directly to AFL Chief Executive Robin Hapi.
In confirming the sale, the former owner of OPC, Graeme Richardson, said he was very happy to see the business, quota and other interests remaining in the hands of an entity with a good reputation and one that was committed to the future wellbeing of the New Zealand fishing industry and the Quota Management System.
Mr Richardson said he was proud to have been associated with the New Zealand fishing Industry for the past 26 years and is looking forward to the time he will now have to pursue other interests.
Settlement takes place today.
Acquisition of Oyster Business

The KOSL business is a specialist producer of Pacific Oysters with a strong reputation for quality and a respected brand in New Zealand and our overseas markets.
This acquisition increases the AFL sales of Pacific Oysters to 1.2 million dozen per annum making AFL the largest producer and marketer of Pacific Oysters in New Zealand.
AFL is delighted to be able to add this business to our growing interests in the New Zealand seafood sector and to complement our already significant commitment to the Oyster Industry through our ownership of Pacific Marine Farms.
Shared Fisheries Workshop

A presentation was provided by CEO Robin Hapi at the Shared Fisheries Workshop held by Te Ohu Kai Moana Trustee Ltd. This workshop was organised by Te Ohu Kaimoana in response to the serious threat that the proposal poses towards the integrity of the 1992 Fisheries Settlement Assets.
The purpose of this workshop was to identify Maori priorities relating to fisheries management and resource allocation, in particular the linkages betwween Maori commercial and non-commercial rights that were guaranteed in the Fisheries Settlement and to develop a comprehensive response to the Shared Fisheries discussion document released by the Ministry of Fisheries in November 2006.
The response to the Shared Fisheries discussion document is due on 28 February 2007.

Customary Needs Provision

Joint Venture with Antons Seafoods, 2005
In early October our company entered into a preliminary arrangement to buy a 50% share in Anton Seafoods. The two new shareholders will form a new joint venture seafood company to process fish on behalf of our Moana Pacific brand, Anton's brand plus other contract arrangements.
As a result of these commercial arrangements our wetfish processing operations for our Napier and Gisborne branches will be phased out by 30 November 2005.
